Petrarch - The Perfect PAideia Student
Well I think we finally have a composition and are ready to paint this portrait. After taking a few weeks to knock out some other pressing things, I am back at the Petrarch portrait project!
Here is the final comp for the painting. Look for updates over the next week or so of the painting process and hopefully the handing over of the finished portrait to the new owner. Should be exciting!
Petrarch - The Creation of the Perfect Student! Part 4
In this episode of “Petrarch - The Perfect PAideia Student” I look at the angle of the light and the position of the viewer. I recruit the help of my son Zane to sit on his sister’s bed as I take many pictures from different angles to see how we want to orient Petarch to the window. Creating a portrait like this takes a lot of thought to be able to pull off. Stay tuned as we get to the point of putting paint to canvas!

Petrarch - The Creation of the Perfect Student! Part 3
In this episode of “Petrarch - The Perfect PAideia Student” the team took all of the brainstorming ideas and pulled them together into a workable composition. There is much more planning to a portrait like this than meets the eye! There are a lot of characteristics that we have been tasked to build into this portrait and it is proving to be a challenge! But we are up to it!

Petrarch - The Perfect PAideia Student - Part 2
In this episode we brainstorm how to represent the characteristics visually and come up with some really cool ideas. We also discuss what style we will use for this painting.
Rembrandt meets David Leffel

This is a very challenging project!
Some of the ideas so far:
- Loves the Lord - He will be reading an open Bible
- Loves his parents - Will have a family crest on the wall
- Joyful and encouraging - Use of light in painting
- Helpful - maybe use a baby toy to represent him helping with his baby sister or have him explaining what he is reading in the bible to his little sister…
- Respectful - Using symbols in the Family Crest
- Displays Decorum - Have a window with friends playing outside while he talks with his sister. Choosing to make sharing Gods word with his sister of higher importance than himself having fun with his friends.
Remember, the painting must be complete by January 12th!!!! Can we do it? Stay tuned to find out!
We are looking for your ideas!!!! If you have suggestions please leave a comment below by clicking on the word comment at the bottom of the post. We value your input!
The Portrait Project
One of the hard parts about being a painter is when people request you to “paint something for them”, for free of course! If you are an artist you know exactly what I am talking about. The creator of PAideia, a classical education program, approached me with a request to paint a portrait of the “Perfect PAideia Student”.
This fictitious student is to have the following characteristics:
- Love the Lord
- Loves his parents
- Joyful and encouraging
- Helpful
- Respectful
- Displays Decorum ((n) decorum, propriety in manners and conduct)
- classroom
- lunchroom
- sports filed
- at home
- at church
- at the mall
- always prepared in class and out
- Works towards his life’s goal of being a fully equipped servant of God.
As you can see this is an interesting challenge. I thought that this would be a great time to engage my painting students and see what we can pull together as a team. This is the first episode of us defining who this character is and starting the brainstorming of how we can pull this off!
The painting must be complete by January 12th!!!! You know these requests always come with unreasonable timelines!
Stay tuned for the next step in this process and let me know if you have any ideas that would work in this painting! Post them in the comments below.
